Audiobooks
I don’t know how a truck driver could survive out here without audiobooks. I couldn’t. Imagine driving ten or eleven hours every day. Now, I can entertain myself “just thinking” as well as the next guy, and better than most, but come on. A good audiobook can make 10 hours simply fly by before you’re aware of it. Since I’m pretty sure the statute of limitations has expired, I can admit that one time, when I was quite new, I was listening to an extremely good book and accidentally drove 15 hours. Only time I ever did that. Wish I could remember what I was reading.
This year for my birthday, Stace gave me the unabridged audio versions of Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. Very, very cool. I’ve read them both before, but they are the sort of books you want to own so you can read them whenever the mood strikes. I love Atlas Shrugged. I don’t agree with everything Rand says, but a lot of it hits home. And the guy who reads this version is excellent. A good reader can make a world of difference when its an audio book. I have been enjoying myself tremendously.
For our anniversary earlier this year we each got Kindles from amazon. Have you seen these things?! They are amazing. A big problem with reading in the truck is no place to store the books. Now you can have literally hundreds of books in one handy little unit the size of a paperback. The other big problem with reading in the truck is bumpy roads. With the Kindle you can make the text size bigger if the road is bumpy. And its not back lit so its easy on your eyes. Now I ask you. Does it get any better than that? What an amazing time we live in. Makes me wish I could live for two or three hundred years just to see what’s coming next.
What I’m reading now:
- Audio: Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
- Kindle: Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by Edwin Lefevre
- Internet: various sites all falling under the So you want to do a Blog but have discovered you’re semi-retarded general description
That’s good stuff.
