WNBA and Olympics
We’ve been home forever now. Watching the Olympics and WNBA day and night. Didn’t realize we had slacked off posting. Hope we didn’t disappoint our fan. Sorry, dude.
So when we got home we had tons of WNBA games TiVo’d for us. Good old TiVo. If you are on the road for any length of time, and you like watching TV, the TiVo is a great thing. Every month we show up and there are all our favorite shows waiting for us. Right now its WNBA season so that’s most of the hard-drive. I can’t believe Phoenix this year. Defending WNBA Champions and they are in the basement in the west. Man they miss Penny Taylor. Sigh.
We have been WNBA fans since the very beginning of the league. I remember the second season we rushed to Wal-Mart on opening day, bought a new big 34 inch tv and rushed home to get it all set-up before tip-off. They still offered the WNBA season pass back then so we watched well over a hundred games in about three months. I would guess during the first four years of the league we watched every game that was broadcast.
One year the finals were only available on ABC which we don’t get at the house. So we loaded up all the party crap and showed up at Stace’s mom’s house to commandeer their tv for the games of the final. Stace’s mom really had no interest in the WNBA but was gracious as usual and we had a good time.
The first couple of seasons the quality of play in the WNBA wasn’t what one might have hoped, but they are great fun to watch now. The thing about the WNBA is that they play real basketball. They don’t depend on the dunk and their one-on-one game like the men do. They run plays. They pass. They defend. They defend hard. They hit the floor for every loose ball. They play like its a play-off game every single night.
But right now it’s the Olympic break in the WNBA season, so we’re getting lots of Olympics instead. I love the Olympics. I love those weird sports that you never get to see any other time. Like solo synchronized swimming. Or really any synchronized swimming. I love how those women walk up to the pool with those creepy manic smiles on their faces. They always look like they just killed their coach in the dressing room and are going with the keep-smiling-and-no-one-will-notice defense.
Or the Dressage events. I mean, my god, it is horses dancing. Horses. Dancing. How do you beat that?
Then there’s the things you can’t believe you saw like that Bolt guy blowing away all those men in the 200m and Michael Phelps getting eight gold medals. I never thought he would make eight. Or those two gymnastics girls going one-two. It’s been a fun Olympics.
That makes me think. Can you believe those buildings that China put up?! I mean that Bird’s Nest is one of the if not the most impressive arena I have ever seen. Its just stunning. Especially at night. And that Water Cube is just mesmerizing. I paused the TiVo and just stared at it. At night when its all lit up the way the walls are constructed make you feel the “water” is suspended in time and will crash to the ground at any second. Spectacular.
China has a good thing going when it comes to the Olympics. All those Olympic buildings are right next to each other. It looks like they just walked around the city and said, “We’ll put the Olympics right here. Tear down everything in a 50 block radius.” It must be nice to be communist sometimes.
