Smoke-signal internet connection
While we were at home I decided to go to the Verizon store and get a new broadband card for the computer. Stace had read that they now have a USB card that will work on either Mac or PC which would mean of course that she might actually check her email once in a while if it worked.
I walked in the store and asked one of the sales people for the card. She didn’t know what I was talking about so she went in the back to get someone else to help me. When the punk came out of the back he was carrying the new card and heading to the register to ring me up. I thought we should just slow this whole process down a little cause I wanted to make sure I was getting the card Stace had read about. So after I had given him my phone number and he had looked up my account on his computer, I asked him about the new card:
Me: Now this is the card that works in both Macs and PCs, right?
Punk: Uhhh… yeah.
Me: In the USB port, right?
Punk: Uhhh… yeah.
Me: Does it also work on the Unlimited National plan like my current card?
Punk: Uhhh… yeah.
Me: Is it as fast as my current card?
Punk [quick check of my account info on his computer to see which card I was currently using followed by a quite obvious and rather loud snort of derision]: Uhhh… you’re like a really old Grandma using smoke signals to get on the internet right now. I don’t even know how you’re connecting with that old a card. Do you have it with you? Can we see it?
Me [watching other sales-punks who were obviously eavesdropping migrate over to see the "Little House on the Prairie" era broadband card in person]: No. It’s at home.
Punk: Uhhh… too bad.
Punk 2: I would have liked to seen that.
As you might imagine, I was a little put out by the whole conversation and was seriously predisposed to dislike new broadband card… except that it’s blazing fast! I mean wow. It really was kinda like moving from a horse and buggy into a sports car of some indeterminate make and model.
If ever there were a time to develop an interest in monkey-porn websites now is the time. No more waiting for the simian porn stream to rebuffer or whatever it’s called. Woo Hooo! Let’s hear it for the 21st century.

Sweet! How awesome for you! I don’t have one of those because I have no life. lol. Although that would have come in handy on our road trip a couple yrs ago.
So are ya back on the road again Willie? (nelson – sorry. I need some brain food)
After shamelessly taking more than 3 days in a row off you have indulged yourself with a state of the art card for your computer? You hussy!
Oh, and happy birthday Stace! Hope it was fab and that Hedon showed you a good time.
I detest the punks at the (select one):
- cell phone store
- computer store
- hardware store
and I usually demand to know where the older guys went who could actually help me and who answered questions with intelligible facts instead of incomprehensible monosyllables. End rant.
But how cool is that new card? May I expect more frequent posts? Because I’m addicted here. More Hags!
Woo Hoo! Welcome to the fast lane, just don’t hog all the bandwidth now, you hear me? lol! There’s something magical about having all that speed there at our fingertips. When we went from dial-up to cable we were like, wow. Seriously? Then, when we went from dull ol’ cable to dsl it was like, wow, we’ve found hyper-drive!
What, I have to ask, comes next? Sub-light speed? Hmm…
Hey – which card did you get? Please advise. We have Verizon and the aircard for the computer and as much as I love it, I don’t know that I would say it was “blazing” fast. Am I missing something? Splain!
CAPTCHA: gallop stop (that’s a little confusing. “Gallop! Stop. Gallop! Stop. Gallop! Stop.” I think this would make for one confused horse.)
Ok don’t get too excited about the new card after all. Since we’ve had it I have had like 25 blue screen crashes. Now you Mac people might not know, but a Blue Screen Crash is bad really really bad. It’s way worse than for example an orange screen crash or a red screen crash.
I know it’s the stupid card, but I haven’t figured out how to fix it yet. Still working on it. I’ll be happily surfing and next thing I know the card is “not inserted” and the very next move I make sends the whole thing crashing around my ears… sigh
